Kat Parsons at Elbo Room - 4/30/01

Reviewed By Eric J. Olsen

The Opinion

When Kat Parsons took the stage, she was accompanied by Martha Larson on cello (and guitar on one song) and Chris Gangi on upright bass. With a guitar, cello, and upright bass, the audience might have been expecting a laidback evening of some great songs. That's not what they got. They did get to hear some great music, but the show was anything but laidback. The energy that emanated from Kat and the band prevented that. Every person in the crowd gave up their free will and submitted to Kat as she took them on a concert experience not soon forgotten.

The range of Kat's vocals is astounding. Whether it's a ballad, a rocker, or a ballsy blues number, the emotion that Kat puts into her delivery can't help but be felt by the audience. In between wowing the audience with her songs, Kat entertained them with the occasional amusing anecdote. From the second she took the stage, Kat never released the audience, keeping them tightly in her entertaining grasp.

When you add in the fact that the three musicians on the stage were playing together for only the third time, the talent and musicianship of Kat, Martha, and Chris becomes even more impressive. They played seamlessly and put on an amazing show. The only downside to the show was when the set was over since no one in the crowd wanted the show to end. Kat Parsons puts on a show that makes you wish you had a photographic memory so you could re-live the show anytime you wanted.

Nutshell Review

Overwhelming talent just pours out of Kat as she keeps the audience wrapped around her finger.
